What Living Off-Grid (and Starlink) Taught Me About Running a Business

When I told people I was moving off-grid in Arizona, most thought I was joking.

“But what about your businesses?” “What about meetings?” “What about the internet?”

That last question had a simple answer: Starlink.

Why I Made the Move

I was tired. Not the kind of tired sleep fixes — the deeper kind that comes from being constantly available, constantly optimizing, constantly on.

Arizona offered the opposite. No neighbors. No notifications. Just desert and space to think.

Elon Made It Possible

I’m a huge Elon Musk fan, and Starlink genuinely made this lifestyle possible.

Before Starlink, “off-grid” meant “disconnected.” You had to choose between freedom and functionality. Satellite internet was slow, expensive, and unreliable.

Starlink changed that equation. Now I have fast, reliable internet in the middle of the Arizona desert. I can run multiple businesses, take video calls, and stay connected to my team — all while watching the sun set over mountains with no other humans in sight.

Technology didn’t take me away from nature. It let me live in it.

Lesson 1: Most “Urgent” Things Aren’t

When you don’t have reliable cell service (Starlink handles internet, not phone calls), you stop responding to everything immediately.

And you know what happens? Almost nothing.

The “urgent” email resolved itself. The client who “needed” an answer figured it out. Urgency is usually manufactured — by other people’s anxiety, by our own need to feel important.

Now I batch communications and respond when I’m ready, not when my phone buzzes.

Lesson 2: Constraints Force Clarity

Limited power. Limited water. Limited connectivity for calls.

These constraints forced me to get clear about what actually matters. I couldn’t waste time on busy work. Every decision had to count.

That mindset carried back into my businesses. I started asking: Does this move the needle? What if I just… didn’t do this?

Lesson 3: Space Creates Better Ideas

My best business ideas haven’t come from strategy meetings. They’ve come from long walks in the desert, sitting in silence, having nothing to do.

When you’re not filling every moment with input, your brain makes connections it couldn’t make before.

The Unexpected Result

My businesses didn’t suffer when I moved off-grid. They grew.

Because I was more focused. Because I made decisions from calm instead of chaos. Because I finally had space to think strategically instead of just reacting.

You Don’t Have to Move to the Desert

The lesson isn’t that everyone should go off-grid. The lesson is that subtraction often beats addition.
